A Revolution that Returns to the Roots ... so much for that idea

Whee, it's E3 time again, the most despressing and hopes-dashing time of year! For Sonic the Hedgehog fans, anyway. If you've been following the little blue rodent's activities lately, you'll notice that he hasn't produced a quality game since Sonic Adventure 2 in 2002 (though I hear Sonic Rush is pretty darn good). But there's hope, right? In the form of Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 for PS3 and Xbox360, right? My favorite video game character of all time is going to have his day again, RIGHT??

Honestly, I'm not sure yet. For months, S06 went with very little info being leaked to the fans or media; a couple of screenshots here, a tidbit about the gameplay there -- just enough to keep us fans excited. The screenshots were possibly the most beautiful images of Sonic I've seen yet. The backgrounds, the enemies, and the hedgehog himself all had the ultra-realism that PS3 and 360 are capable of, but with that touch of imagination and fantasy that Sonic's world has been renowned for.

Then, all of sudden, there were press releases, bits of gameplay footage, and trailers all released in the span of a few days! I've been trying to keep up with it through the GHZ, but because of my snail-paced internet connection, I've yet to see video footage other than the Xbox trailer. Nonetheless, I feel obligated to announce my feelings on the game...

...which are pretty much the same as everyone else, from what I gather. At first, I was kind of put off by how totally different the game is, then I realized that, maybe, this is just SonicTeam's way of starting fresh. There isn't a hint of Tails, Knuckles, or the countless other characters that Sonic has dragged with him through his games. Originally, this had brought the hopeful belief that this game would be a solo mission for Sonic, but then Shadow showed up as a playable character, along with this stupid new white-colored hedgehog character named (take a guess. Take a guess. I bet you can guess it. No, it's not Spectre the Hedgehog. Close though. It's) Silver the Hedgehog.

"Enough with the hedgehogs!" I thought. "Enough with the new characters! Enough with the Sonic look-alikes!" But then I got to thinking -- if there aren't a dozen other secondary characters clogging up the works, maybe I can stand one new one and Shadow. And truthfully, Silver doesn't look that much like Sonic. He looks like a bad fan-character out of a yaoi Sonic fanfic, but that's beside the point.

Additionally, much as others might whine about it, I liked the different gameplay styles in SA2. Yes, I'd have preferred it if Sonic had stayed solo, but that's what Sonic Wild Fire for the Wii (teehee wii) will be for. I don't mind if Silver and Shadow have different gameplay from Sonic's, and I'm actually looking forward to it. As long as they're fucking GOOD.

All the secondary things -- the new "realistic" character models, the environments, the story revealed so far, the enemies, etc., don't really bother me and some of them look honestly pretty cool, if different. This ain't your grandaddy's Sonic, but maybe it can be just as good.

Maybe.

Probably not.

But, maybe.
